Appendix I: Timeline of Events

Timeline from 2014-2024
Turmoil in the Middle East (2014)
After top officials in Pakistan are found to have harbored terrorists, the United States declares war. The Pakistani government falls to the might of its citizens long before US troops reach the capitol, but the "War on Terror" keeps United States soldiers in the territory for the entire year, and beyond. The United States is now occupying Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, with Iran pushing the limits of the West's patience.
Wars in the East (2015)
The United States is forced into action when an Iranian militant group attempts to fire a nuclear weapon into Israel while simultaneously moving a major naval force to the Indian Ocean, where US officials hope to prevent an Indian invasion of Pakistan, leaving its military spread too thin to support an other NATO operations. The leader of Korea, Kim Jung-Il, dies on February Fifth. The cause of his death remains unknown. Kim Jong Un assassinates his brother and takes over the North Korean government, blaming South Korean politicians for both deaths.
The End of an Era (2016-2017)
With a war against Korea looming over the horizon, and four wars already raging in the Middle East, the United States struggles with an overwhelming war debt. Under their new President, the American people voluntarily sacrifice many of their rights and cut major educational programs. Gang activity increases in areas not considered economically worth the funding of police forces, forcing individuals like Paul Adalgiso out of Oakland. With the European Union's economic crisis still spiraling out of control, China quickly becomes the richest nation on the planet.
Cold War (2018)
The Unified Korean State declares war on the United States, but takes no action against its sworn enemy. China, however, begins to move its armies toward the Korean border, understanding that it will be able to quickly seize territory if Korea attacks the longtime Chinese trading partner.
The War Heats Up (February-April 2019)
Korea invades Japan using a surprisingly advanced army, made up primarily of last-generation Chinese equipment, and the threat of nuclear attack. United States panics, sending in troops destined to meet a Chinese front in the former Demilitarized Zone, and forcing Korea to rethink its "methodical" strategy.
Nuclear Warfare (June 2019)
China takes heavy losses when a nuclear detonation occurs on the Korean border. The United States immediately pulls out of the Middle East and redirects all military power toward Korea. The San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles barely survive nuclear attacks by a pair of Korean submarines off the California coast.
Flinching (July 2019)
The United States and China hesitate, expecting another set of nuclear strikes. Korean forces use the opportunity to sneak past the US blockade and eventually reach the coast of Oregon. The force is able to take several cities before facing any resistance.
Slowing Progress (July-August 2019)
The Korean Army is unable to push farther than the coastal cities they had initially invaded. Underestimating the power of the civilian population and the quick response of US reserve forces, only twenty of the original eighty-four Korean assault fleets survive the retreat. The Japanese are punished for the Korean Army's incompetence.
Retaliation (2019-2021)
China and the United States work together to crush the Korean military. While China liberates and rebuilds Japan, the United States begins a second brutal war in Korean territory. Kim Jong Un is killed by a US "Black Ops" team, but is reported to have been murdered by one of his own. The North Korean Generals turn on the official,  creating a power vacuum. The North Korean Army surrenders within the month. After years of conflict, South Korea finally becomes safely independent. China claims complete control of North Korea, while they allow Japan to retain its sovereignty.
An Opportunity for Growth (October 2021)
The Chinese Liberation Army takes over South Korea, claiming that the entire peninsula could be a hiding place for escape North Korean officials, promising to hold elections deciding the fate of the southern nation. No vote is ever held. Japan, bot gracious and embarrassed, turns a blind eye toward the brutality of Chinese forces on the Korean Peninsula. The European Union condemns China's actions, but does nothing to stop their efforts at expansion.
Asserting Dominance (December 2021)
The Japanese pledge their loyalty to the Chinese economic machine. While remaining independent of their now-superior neighbors, their economic and scientific endeavors, along with a portion of their military force, are strictly monitored and often leeched upon by China. Unofficially, the Japanese President says that he never thought he would see the day when he called the Chinese his superior.
Old Habits Die Hard (2022)
The United States resumes its wars in the Middle East as though the previous four years had changed nothing. The West Coast receives little-to-no aid, and comparisons are made to the South after it was devastated by hurricanes over a decade before. Any faith left in the government is lost in regions where Korea had attacked.
Three Wars End (2023)
With Iraq and Afghanistan developing "stable" governments, and insurgents fleeing the region, the United States pulls out its armed forces. Soldiers also leave Iran, whose government is held under the strong thumb of NATO-backed Israel, and whose nuclear project has been completely annihilated. Pakistan, however becomes more chaotic, with foreign insurgents swarming into its borders and destabilizing the new "Westernized" democratic government.
The United Human Faction (February 26, 2024)
Four students at Fresno State University joke about creating a new internet-based government system, based upon the anonymity of leaders and the openness of forums. They create a website called "The Institute for a United Humanity,"and are surprised when the site is swarmed by victims of gang violence and veterans of war seeking change across the country.

Sharon, Julian, Paul, and Karen form the United Human Faction, dedicated to the reconstruction of a country left in shambles. They dissemble gangs, enlist paramilitaries, and suck corporations dry, but their more fanatical members seek greener pastures. They seek the bloodstained offices of those they blame for all their earthly woes.
